Step one: Lead in (2-3m)

QWhat is your dream? What would you do to follow it?

Step two: Guide the Ss to watch the video and answer three questions to get a general impression of the speech. (10m)

1. Do you think the speaker is a native American?

2. What do you think of the speaker?

3. What are the five ways how not to follow your dreams?

Step three: Guide the Ss to read the text carefully and answer five questions.

1. What are the two stories about?

2. "And let me tell you, go through this pipe", what does "pipe" refer to?

3. What does the speaker use to support her third idea?

4. What does the speaker constantly see people saying?

5. According to the speaker, what is life?

Step four:

1. Guide the Ss to point out the functions of these argumentative approaches.

(To make the speech convincing, persuasive, reasonable)

2. Guide the Ss to figure out the five ways how to follow their dreams.

1) Believe in overnight success.

3. Guide the Ss to state the reasons why the speaker choose to tell “five ways how not to follow your dreams” instead of “five ways to follow your dreams”?

1) These five ways are common mistakes we might make in our daily life which will help us to avoid these mistakes.

2) The usage of irony (反语) makes the language more impressive and appealing.

Step five: Summary

Guide the Ss to pay attention to two aspects when dealing with the content of a speech: ideas & argumentative approaches whether as a speaker or an audience.

(The end of the first period)

Step six: Conclude the content of the first period and guide the Ss to pay attention to some other factors while watching a speech.

Q: As an audience, what else should we pay attention to while watching a speech?

Step seven: Ask the Ss to watch the video again to write a comment on the speech with about 120 words with the following three parts.

1. a general introduction about the speech

2. different aspects of the speech such as content, language and non-verbal skills

3. a conclusion

Step eight: Provide the Ss with the following three criteria for peer assessment or teachers’ assessment. (Ideas, Structure, Language)

Step nine: The teacher comments on some writings and provide a sample essay.

Step ten: Conclusion

When watching a TED speech, we should pay attention to the content, the language and the non-verbal skills.

Step two: Ss answer the questions quickly, for question 3, if they don’t know, give them the text to skim for the answer.

Step three: While answering the questions, Ss are supposed to be guided to figure out the argumentative approaches.

Step four: Ss are supposed to discuss in groups to figure out the questions with the assistance of the teacher.
